Students arrive in Year 12 having done well at GCSE and expect A-Level to feel like more of the same. It does not. Six specific things change, and knowing them in advance removes most of the shock.
1. Questions stop telling you the topic
At GCSE, most questions signal their method. At A-Level, a question may require differentiation, then a quadratic, then an inequality, with none of that stated. Selecting the method is now part of the assessment.
2. Algebra becomes the language, not a topic
Every A-Level topic is delivered through algebra. Students who could get through GCSE by being careful and slow with rearranging find that the same care now costs them the time they need for the actual question.
3. Pace roughly doubles
A topic that took two weeks at GCSE may take three lessons. There is no built-in time to catch up later, which is why a gap in October is still a gap in March unless it is dealt with deliberately.
4. Answers must be justified
'Show that', 'hence', 'prove' and 'verify' each demand a different response, and marks are given for the reasoning as much as the result. A correct answer with no working can score less than half.
5. Applied maths appears alongside pure
Statistics and mechanics are examined too, including work with a large data set and modelling assumptions. Students who like pure often neglect these until it is late.
6. Independent work becomes the main driver
Progress at A-Level tracks what happens between lessons far more than at GCSE. Doing the set exercise is the minimum, not the plan.
What good preparation looks like
- Twenty minutes a day of pure algebra drill, written out fully.
- Learn the exact-value trigonometry and surd forms so they are instant.
- Get comfortable reading a question twice before writing anything.
- Start a mistakes page in week one and keep it all year.
