Grade 9 sits at the very top of the Higher tier and is awarded to a small proportion of entries each year. The boundary moves depending on how the cohort performs, so no fixed mark guarantees it. What does not move is the nature of the questions that decide it.
The difference between a 7 and a 9
Students at grade 7 can usually do every standard method on the specification. They lose the top band on the multi-step, lightly-worded questions near the end of each paper — the ones that combine two topics and never say which. A grade 9 student is not faster at algebra; they are better at deciding what a question is asking.

The topics that decide the top band
- Algebraic fractions, rearranging and completing the square — they appear inside other questions rather than as their own.
- Surds and indices, especially exact answers in geometry and trigonometry.
- Circle theorems combined with algebra, where the reason must be stated as well as the value.
- Vectors, particularly proving that points are collinear or that lines are parallel.
- Iteration, functions and inverse functions, which many students meet only briefly.
- Ratio and proportion in disguise — best-value, mixtures, and compound measures set inside a wordy context.
How to practise for it
- Do the last third of past papers only, repeatedly, until unfamiliar wording stops being the obstacle.
- Work from more than one exam board — an AQA or OCR question on the same topic is an unseen question for an Edexcel student.
- Mark strictly against the official mark scheme and note whether each lost mark was recall, method, selection or arithmetic.
- Keep a single page of 'questions that beat me' and revisit it every fortnight, cold.
- Time yourself at roughly one mark per minute so the hard questions are met with time left, not two minutes to go.
What usually holds a student back
In almost every case it is algebra fluency, not the top-band topics themselves. A student who has to think about rearranging has no attention left for the structure of the question. Fixing algebra to the point of automaticity is what frees up the thinking a grade 9 needs, and it is the quickest gain available to most students already sitting at a 7.
