How to revise for A-Level Maths: a teacher's step-by-step plan

Most A-Level Maths students revise by re-reading notes and redoing questions they can already do. Here is what to do instead, in the order I'd do it with a student in a one-to-one lesson.

A-Level Maths is not a memory subject, which is why the revision habits that worked at GCSE often stop working in Year 12. You can read a chapter of a textbook three times and still not be able to start question 7. The examiners are not testing whether you have seen a method; they are testing whether you can choose one under pressure, on a question worded in a way you have not seen before.

Below is the revision sequence I use with students. It works whether you sit Edexcel, AQA, OCR or OCR MEI, because the underlying skill — recognise, select, execute, check — is the same on every board.

1. Find out what you actually can't do

Almost every student overestimates some topics and underestimates others. Before you plan anything, get honest data. Take the specification for your board and go through it topic by topic, giving each a rating: confident, shaky, or no idea. Then test that judgement — pick two questions per topic from a past paper and try them cold, with no notes and a timer.

You will usually find two or three topics you thought were fine that collapse under exam conditions. Those are the highest-value hours in your revision plan.

2. Revise in the three layers a question actually needs

A mark scheme rewards three separate things, and you should revise all three deliberately rather than assuming practice covers them all.

Students who only do the middle layer feel productive and then freeze in the exam, because a real paper never tells you which chapter a question came from.

3. Use past papers properly

Past papers are the single most useful resource you have, and most students burn through them badly — doing them open-book, marking generously, and never returning to the questions they got wrong.

  1. Do the paper timed, in one sitting, with only the formula booklet and a calculator you actually own.
  2. Mark it yourself against the official mark scheme, awarding marks exactly as written — not as you think you deserve.
  3. For every lost mark, write one line: was it recall, method, selection, or arithmetic?
  4. Group those lines. Three arithmetic slips is a checking problem; three selection errors in integration is a teaching problem.
  5. Redo only the questions you lost marks on, one week later, cold.

Step 3 is the one nearly everyone skips, and it is the one that turns a paper into information rather than just an afternoon spent.

4. A weekly structure that holds up

Consistency beats intensity. A realistic weekly pattern for a Year 13 student in the spring term looks something like this.

  • Daily, 10 minutes: formula and standard-result recall, written from blank.
  • Three sessions of 40–50 minutes: one weak topic per session, taken to independent accuracy.
  • One session: a mixed-topic exercise where you do not know the topic in advance.
  • Every other week: a full past paper, timed, marked and analysed as above.

Four focused hours structured like this will beat ten unfocused ones. If you are in Year 12, halve the volume and keep the structure.

5. Fix exam technique, not just maths

A large share of the marks students lose are not mathematical. They are technique.

  • Show the line before the answer. Method marks are awarded for working, and a correct answer with no working can still score less than full marks on 'show that' and 'hence' questions.
  • Read the command word. 'Show that', 'hence', 'prove' and 'verify' each require a different kind of response, and 'hence' means you must use the previous part.
  • Give answers to the accuracy asked for, and keep full precision in the calculator until the final line.
  • Watch the marks-to-minutes ratio: roughly one mark per minute is the right pace, and a question that has taken far longer than its mark tally should be left and revisited.

6. Know when the problem is not revision

If a student is working hard and still stuck, the issue is usually not effort — it is that something underneath the current topic was never secure. A student who cannot integrate confidently often has an algebra problem, not an integration problem. No amount of extra integration practice fixes that; going back one layer does.

That diagnosis is the part that is genuinely hard to do alone, and it is where one-to-one teaching earns its place: finding the actual cause rather than working through whatever is due that week.
