Why is A-Level Maths so hard? An honest answer from a teacher

A-Level Maths is genuinely demanding, but most of the difficulty students feel comes from four causes — and three of them are fixable within a term.

When a student tells me A-Level Maths is too hard, the useful question is which kind of hard. The answer is almost always one of four things.

Cause 1: an unfinished GCSE foundation

The commonest cause by a distance. A student who has to stop and think about surds, indices or rearranging cannot follow a chain of reasoning that uses them casually. This looks like an A-Level problem and is a GCSE one. It is also the fastest to fix.

Cause 2: method selection has not been taught explicitly

Lessons naturally cover one topic at a time, so students practise methods in labelled sets and then meet unlabelled questions in the exam. The skill of choosing has to be practised separately, with mixed exercises.

Cause 3: pace

Content arrives faster than at GCSE and there is no slack in the schedule. A week off ill in Year 12 can leave a hole that is never revisited in class.

Cause 4: genuine abstraction

Some of it is simply hard. Proof, functions, differential equations and mechanics modelling ask for a kind of thinking that is new. This part takes time rather than a trick — but it is a much smaller share of the difficulty than students assume.

Signs it is the foundation, not the topic

  • You understand the lesson but cannot start the homework.
  • Your answers are right in method and wrong in value.
  • You lose time on the middle of a question rather than the beginning.
  • You can explain what to do but not carry it out cleanly.

If those describe you, going back one layer for two or three weeks will do more than any amount of extra practice on the topic in front of you.
